Dentures Q&A

What’s the difference between a complete and partial denture?

Complete dentures replace all the teeth on the upper or lower arch while a partial denture replaces one or several teeth. Both types of dentures feature a gum-colored base designed to grip the gums and blend in for a natural appearance.

How are dentures fitted?

Fittings begin with impressions of the area that’s being treated. These impressions are sent to a lab that specializes in the creation of custom dentures using state-of-the-art materials for the most comfortable and secure fit and the most natural appearance. Once the dentures are ready, the patient returns to the office for a fitting and adjustment.

I have complete upper and lower dentures. Do I still need to see the dentist?

Yes, all men and women (and children) need to see the dentist on a regular basis even if they no longer have their natural teeth. Seeing the dentist routinely helps ensure the gums and other soft tissues are healthy and it also provides an opportunity to make adjustments that can help the dentures fit more comfortably so sore spots and potential infections can be avoided. Having regular adjustments also helps prevent embarrassing slippage. And finally, regular checkups allow the dentist to perform oral cancer screenings to look for subtle signs that may need additional evaluation.

How long will it be before my dentures feel comfortable?

Most patients feel completely comfortable within a week or two, depending on how many teeth are being replaced and whether or not the patient has worn dentures in the past. Patients can “speed up” the adjustment period by practicing reading out loud and eating a variety of foods at home before going out for social events. If dentures slip or create sore spots, call the office right away to have an adjustment.

How should I care for my dentures?

Dentures can be cared for with regular brushing, just like natural teeth. Rinsing with mouthwash helps dentures stay fresh and destroys bacteria missed by brushing. The gums should also be gently brushed to keep them clean and healthy. When dentures are not being worn, they should be kept moist in a container or water or a denture soaking agent.
