Tooth Extraction Q & A

Why are tooth extractions needed?

There are a variety of reasons that tooth extraction may be needed. Advanced tooth decay is a leading reason. While there may be some restorative options for decayed teeth, for example root canal therapy, these options may not be effective when the tooth is seriously decayed. Advanced gum disease is another reason for tooth extraction. When a person suffers from advanced gum disease, their gum tissue weakens and starts to recede. This eventually causes a severe lack of support for the tooth, often to the point that it must be extracted because it's so unstable. In some cases, teeth are extracted after a trauma. The tooth may have been partially knocked out during a collision or a blow to the face, for example. Sometimes the root structure is compromised to such a degree that extraction is the best choice. Children and teenagers may sometimes need to have teeth extracted if their baby teeth are never lost so that the adult teeth can emerge normally. Wisdom teeth extractions are often done to alleviate pain, pressure, and alignment issues in the mouth.

How does tooth extraction work?

The tooth extraction process focuses on the patient's comfort. The dentist will administer a local anesthetic to completely numb the extraction area. Patients won't experience pain during the extraction, but they may have a mild sensation of tugging or pressure. Once the tooth is extracted, the dentist will thoroughly clean the extraction area and pack it with sterile gauze.

What should patients do after tooth extraction?

The Infinity Smile Center team will provide patients with aftercare guidelines following their tooth extraction. Generally, the instructions include eating a soft diet for the first day after the extraction. Patients can take over the counter medication for pain relief, or the dentist can provide patients with prescription medication if needed. After the first day, patients need to rinse gently with a saltwater rinse to facilitate cleaning and healing.
